Who Is Goddess Hathor . . .
Goddess Hathor is one of the most ancient and beloved deities within the Egyptian Pantheon.
While Hathor’s name is said to mean “The House of Horus,” this awesome aspect of the Divine
Feminine carries many titles and fulfills many roles. Some of Hathor’s titles include: The
Celestial Cow, Mother of Light, The Golden One, Lady of the Sycamore, Lady of Heaven, and
Queen of the Earth . . . (to name just a few)
Goddess Hathor is often depicted with bovine attributes; sometimes seen as a beautiful
woman with a cow’s head, other times as a beautiful woman with bovine ears and she often
depicted with a solar disc between two cow horns. Celestial connections include the sun, the
moon, the Milky Way, the Pleiades and Venus.
Hathor is truly a Multi-Dimensional aspect of the Divine Feminine. She is considered a sky
goddess, a sun goddess, a moon goddess, and a love and fertility goddess. Hathor is all this and
a whole lot more, and perhaps everything in between . . . Her attributes having tremendous
range - from birth to death and the physical life we experience in between, Hathor can handle
it all!
One of Hathor’s major roles is as a Divine Mother Goddess, Creation, Conception, Birth,
Nurturing and Sustaining is the Goddess’ Guise as the Celestial Cow. Aligned with newborns,
pregnancy, and midwives; Hathor welcomes us into our physical life and plays a protective and
sacred role within the birthing process and provides protection and sustenance for newborns.
Goddess Hathor is also aligned with the dead, providing protection, rest and sustenance for the
souls making their transition back to the spirit world. In this capacity Hathor’s sacred form is
said to be the Lady of the Sycamore Tree, in which she holds sacred space as we move from our
physical existence, welcoming us back to Spirit.
She also plays an important role during our time between birth and death, as this Goddess is
also aligned with Pleasurable Pursuits! Love, Fertility, Sexuality, Beauty, Attraction, Cosmetics,
Fashion, Music, Dance, Intoxication, Celebration, and Joy are all platforms from which Goddess
Hathor reigns.
As a Divine Ambassador of Beauty, Hathor specializes in both physical beauty and in the
remembrance that our True Essential Beauty is eternal and timeless. If invited Hathor will act
as a Cosmic Beauty Consultant, guiding us with fashion, cosmetics and personal style.
However, a true “beauty make-over” is first and foremost an inside job. For if we do not
innately know our beauty, if we do not perceive our self as beautiful and/or do not believe in
our own beauty, no amount of make-up or designer clothes will effectively alter our outlook.
Therefore, Goddess Hathor will act as a divine bridge, providing the pathway of remembrance
to our True Essential Self, facilitating the remembrance of our innate, eternal and timeless
beauty that is an expression of our Divine Self. Hathor will also act as a Healer, assisting us to
release, heal and transcend negative thought patterns, negative beliefs and unhealed energy
relating to our self-image. Clearing the way for us to cross the bridge of remembrance and
reawaken the memory of our True Essential Self within our conscious awareness. With this
remembrance we will know our True Beauty.
One of Hathor’s sacred symbols is a mirror. Mirror symbolism provides references to beauty,
attractiveness, as well as to provide reflection of our embodiment of the Divine Source,
reflection of our Divine Light and reflection of Divine Love, which is our true essence.
Gold and the precious gemstones turquoise and malachite are sacred to Goddess Hathor.
Another of her major symbols is the Menat necklace. This intricately beaded necklace is
considered an important ritual item, and was both worn and utilized as a rattle. Associations
include fertility, sexuality, the womb and the divine union.
The sistrum, a ritual rattle with metal cymbal like discs is a significant symbol and ritual item
for this Goddess. The sistrum was shaped in two forms, one shape being the form of an ankh
and the other in the shape of a "naos", or shrine. Associations and uses include fertility and
life, cleansing and clearing, blessings, invocation and percussion for celebrations and festivals.
Celebrate! Celebrate! Dance to the Music . . . Could be Goddess Hathor’s theme song as in
ancient times dancing was one of her primary forms of worship. Music and Dance is another
domain of delight where this aspect of the Divine Feminine is considered Queen! A Goddess of
percussion and queen of the dance, followers would play percussion instruments such as the
sistrum, frame drums and tambourines, clapping, singing, and performing erotic, freeform
dances within sacred ceremony. Through music and movement worshipers would join with the
divine and create joyful expression in celebration of this wondrous and beloved Goddess.
An ancient yet timeless expression of Spirit, music and dance provides a platform for us to
embrace life as a beautiful expression of our Divine Essence in physical action. Whenever we
make merriment with music and dance Hathor is sure to join us!
In whatever way that we may personally relate to rejoicing in life, Goddess Hathor is here to
support our quest in experiencing a joyful, beautiful and fulfilling life. A Divine Guardian and
Guide at birth, through the physical life experience and the transition back to spirit, Goddess
Hathor is a beautiful representation of the infinite love and the all-encompassing, steadfast
support of the Divine Universal Source.
