Some reference the Rowan Tree as being considered “The Tree of Life” in Celtic mythology, other references state the Celts considered the Rowan “The Tree of Quickening,” “The Tree of Sacred Fire” and “ The Tree of Awakening Spirit.” The Rowan is considered one of the most magical trees in the Celtic worldview, symbolizing protection, wisdom and courage. The druids believed the Rowan Tree offered a harmonious balance of beauty and hardiness. Rowan Tree’s symbolic attributes include: balance, protection, wisdom, healing, mystery, divination and transformation.   There are many myths associated with the Rowan Tree, including in Norse mythology as the Rowan tree was the tree that the first woman was created from and the Rowan was said to have saved the life of Thor. In Greek mythology the story of the Goddess Hebe loosing her chalice, the eagles that fought to recover the cup, their drops of blood and feathers are said to be what created the leafs and berries of the Rowan Tree.  Carrying strong energy of protection, Rowans are said to provide protection to those that dwell next to where it grows.  Rowans are sometimes known as “The Lady of the Mountains” due to their ability to thrive in inhospitable mountain environments or as the “Flying Rowans” that grew out of inaccessible clefts in cliff rock or out of the crevasse of another tree.  Mead, wine, ale and jelly were made from the berries and the wood was often utilized for spindles and spinning wheels, tool handles and as a sacred staff or walking stick and Rowan twigs were used for divining, the bark was used as a powerful dye. The name Rowan means The Little Red One and when we were adopting a little red Golden Retriever, we knew the vibration of the noble name matched our darling girl.  The Rowan Tree Reiki is named after our Red-Golden Retriever, and carries with it our love of our darling girl Rowan as well as the beautiful and powerful attributes of the sacred Rowan Tree. Associated with the Tree of Life, the protective qualities of the Rowan Tree or that the Rowan is able to thrive in harsh conditions, retaining its grace and its potential for healing, or its balance of beauty and hardiness, the Rowan provides a beautiful symbolic vibration for our Reiki practice.
